God in Sports

I recently read an article by Phil Mushnick on God in sports. His point was how players and coaches thank God for winning or persevering in a game and how ridiculous this really is. Like God is favoring one team over the other.

He writes in part about the Super Bowl and coach Tony Dungy of the Colts; " ... Tony Dungy, who told the nation, through a CBS microphone, that with the Bears having returned the opening kickoff for a TD, he told his Colts that "The Lord doesn't always bring you directly through." Yep, sometimes the Lord gives the other team a 7-0 lead. "

I've always been uncomfortable as a Christian how the Lord is thanked for successes, yet his name is never brought up during the hard times. Mr Mushnick goes on to say "... Colts' owner Jim Irsay, in accepting the Super Bowl trophy, gave all the credit for the win to God. All glory to God. "That's what got us here," he testified from the midfield podium-turned-pulpit.
And Irsay's words were kinda odd, given that just before accepting the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the name of God (such modesty!), Irsay offered his condolences to the folks in Central Florida who had lost their loved ones and homes in tornadoes, two days before. Oh, yeah, sorry about that killer weather you folks up the road got hit with the other day. Rough stuff. On the other hand, tonight God was right here in Miami, doing His thing with us and for us, the Colts! "

It just seems disingenuous and self-serving to bring God up in a time of triumph. I think the players are doing more for themselves than for the Glory of God.

Here goes nothing ....

This is my first attempt at blogging, so I have no idea what to expect. I used to have a Myspace account where I would wax prophetic, but I always felt out of place there. Besides I don't need all the other stuff ... all I want is a place to log my thoughts. Hence I'm giving this a try.
